About Vila Franca do Campo
Vila Franca do Campo was the first capital of São Miguel, until it was destroyed by an earthquake in 1522. Today it is a historic town on the south coast, famous for Vila Franca Islet — a submerged volcanic crater classified as a Nature Reserve, with a perfectly circular natural pool inside, reachable by boat in summer. The municipality also includes Água d'Alto Beach, Ribeira Quente Beach (with sand warmed by hot springs) and the Nossa Senhora da Paz Hermitage on top of the hill, reached by 109 steps.
