Vila do Porto is the capital of Santa Maria — the first of the Azores islands to be settled by the Portuguese in the 15th century and the sunniest island in the archipelago. Santa Maria stands apart from the other islands with its warmer climate, golden sand beaches, red and ochre cliffs and the unique landscape shaped by the oldest volcanic rocks in the Azores. The annual Santa Maria Air Show is one of the largest in the Atlantic.
