Biscoitos is a village on Terceira's north coast famous for its extraordinary natural lava pools — formed by ancient basalt flows that create crystal-clear swimming pools and channels sheltered from the open Atlantic. The village also produces one of the Azores' most distinctive wines, grown in vineyards enclosed by walls of black basalt stone that protect the vines from ocean winds. The lava meeting the sea creates a spectacular landscape along this entire stretch of coast.
