About Caniçal
Caniçal is a parish of the Machico municipality, at Madeira's eastern tip, and was the island's traditional whaling capital until the industry ended in 1981. The Machico Whale Museum — housed in Caniçal's former whale factory — preserves skeletons, equipment and the memory of an industry that shaped local identity for decades. The village has an active fishing port and boatyards, and is the gateway to Ponta de São Lourenço, Madeira's most arid and spectacular peninsula, whose trail to Ponta do Furado is one of the most popular hikes on the island.
