Calheta is the cultural and recreational hub of western Madeira — the municipality's artificial golden sand beach is one of the few on the island, the Casa das Mudas arts centre is one of the finest contemporary art spaces in Portugal and the Engenho da Calheta is the only working traditional sugarcane mill still producing artisanal Madeiran rum. The western coast's dramatic cliffs and deep valleys make this one of the island's most scenic areas.
