Madalena do Mar is one of Madeira's most peaceful coastal villages — the small settlement is surrounded by the terraced banana plantations and sugarcane fields that cover the lower slopes of the island's south coast. The village church, the black pebble beach and the quiet seafront promenade offer a genuine alternative to the busier resort areas, and the levada walks above the village lead through some of the island's finest scenery.
