Velas is the main town and seat of the municipality on São Jorge island, with a harbour on the Pico channel that welcomes ferries from the neighbouring islands. The historic centre has 18th-century churches, the Jardim da República, the Casa Cultural and 17th-century walls. Velas is the gateway to the island's famous fajãs (Cubres, Santo Cristo, Ouvidor) and to the production of PDO São Jorge cheese, one of the Azores' great gastronomic treasures.
