Lajes do Pico

Lajes do Pico was the heart of Azorean whaling — for centuries the men of Lajes hunted sperm whales from open boats using hand-thrown harpoons in one of the most dangerous occupations in the world. The town's Whaling Museum preserves this extraordinary heritage, and the rugged south coast of Pico, with its black lava shores and clear Atlantic waters, is ideal for swimming, diving and watching whales.
