Velas is the main town of São Jorge — the long, narrow island known for its dramatic fajãs, fertile coastal ledges created by ancient landslides that drop abruptly to the sea. São Jorge's celebrated cheese, one of the finest in Portugal, is produced from the milk of cattle that graze the impossibly green pastures. The island's rugged landscape and the fajã of Caldeira de Santo Cristo, with its unique freshwater lagoon, draw adventurous visitors.
