About Povoação
Povoação is the town where the first settlers landed in the Azores in 1432, making it the very first settlement of the archipelago. Set in south-eastern São Miguel, in a lush green valley wedged between hills, the municipality also encompasses Furnas (with its thermal caldeiras and volcanic stew) and the best waterfalls on the island, such as the Ribeira Quente waterfall. A less touristy but deeply beautiful area, perfect for hiking and hot-spring bathing.
