About Porto da Cruz
Porto da Cruz is a fishing village in the Machico municipality, on Madeira's northeast coast, dominated by the imposing Penha d'Águia — a 590 m rock massif that plunges straight into the sea. The town centre is home to one of the last working agricultural rum distilleries in Europe, the Engenho do Norte, where spirit is still produced directly from sugarcane. The black pebble beach, the Alagoa natural pools and the Larano coastal trail to Machico are the area's main draws.
