About Beja

Beja is the capital of Baixo Alentejo and one of the hottest cities in Portugal. Founded by the Romans as Pax Julia, the city preserves a rich medieval heritage with its imposing castle, cathedral and the famous Convent of Nossa Senhora da Conceição — where, according to tradition, the celebrated "Letters of a Portuguese Nun" were written in the 17th century. The Beja Regional Museum, housed in a 16th-century palace, displays invaluable religious and archaeological art.
