About Alcácer do Sal
Alcácer do Sal is one of the oldest continuously inhabited towns in Europe, set on a hillside above the Sado river. The medieval castle, built over Roman and Moorish foundations, offers sweeping views over the rice paddies and the Sado estuary. The town is a gateway to the Comporta coast and the Sado Nature Reserve, where dolphins, white storks and flamingos can be spotted. Local specialities include rice dishes, eels and the sweet encharcada.
