Chaves is famed for its hot thermal springs — the Romans built the first baths here and the tradition continues today in a pleasant spa town on the Tâmega river. The Roman bridge, one of Portugal's best-preserved, leads to the medieval keep, and the smoked Chaves presunto (cured ham) is renowned throughout Portugal.
