Aljustrel has been mined since ancient times — the Romans extracted copper and iron pyrite here, and large-scale mining continues today beneath the vast Alentejo plains. The town retains a strong working identity, surrounded by the wheat fields and cork oak forests that define the Baixo Alentejo landscape.
